The investigational study drug, bempedoic acid, is designed to help lower LDL-cholesterol. LDL is a type of fat found in the bloodstream. Some LDL in the blood is healthy, but high amounts can be harmful. If a person has too much LDL, it can get stuck in their blood vessels and cause serious health problems.
Bempedoic acid is approved by some regulatory authorities in Europe and the US for adults with HeFH. However, because the study medication has not yet approved as a pediatric high cholesterol treatment, it is considered investigational.
The study staff will provide participants with a supply of the medication to take home. Participants will take bempedoic acid once daily by mouth and can choose between pill and liquid forms. Most of the time, the participant will take the study medication at home, but a few times they will take it at the study clinic. The study medication should be taken at the same time each day.
Investigational means the study medication is not approved by regulatory authorities like the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and it can only be used in clinical research studies like CLEAR Path 1.
